Will 2023 be the year that the Bafta Film Awards definitively pull in a different direction from the US Academy Awards – taking on a more distinctive identity? This feels like an exciting moment for the Bafta Film Awards, often perceived – rightly or wrongly – as too similar to the Oscars, and too dominated by US films. But, certainly in the UK, there are loud voices encouraging the Bafta Film Awards to establish a stronger individual identity, stepping away from the long shadow of their glamorous American cousin. In 2001, Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was the most-nominated title at the Bafta Film Awards – tied with Gladiator. Despite those interesting differences, when it came to picking winners, determined by all Bafta Film Awards voters, there turned out to be huge overlap with the US Academy members’ choices.

Bafta chair Krishnendu Majumdar reflects on final year in role, “progress” of 2023 film nominations

Bafta chair Krishnendu Majumdar is bidding farewell to his post after three years in the role with a sense of accomplishment at the breadth of films to make the 2023 nominations list. All Quiet On The Western Front, the German-language Netflix film directed by Edward Berger, has received the most nominations, at 14. “Look at the range and breadth in best film,” says Majumdar, who will be succeeded by deputy chair and leading talent agent Sara Putt. Zero female directors are nominated for best film, a category with no interventions, and only Charlotte Wells making the initial longlist of 10 for Aftersun. “We don’t have a female director of best film nominated, but we have 11 female-named nominee directors across all of our categories, which I think is great,” says Higgs.

'Boiling Point' TV series to be made with original creative team for the BBC (exclusive)

Philip Barantini’s single-shot UK film Boiling Point is to return as a BBC One series from the same creative team as the feature. Consisting of five 60-minute episodes, the Boiling Point series will begin filming early next year, and will launch on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Graham Drover, a first assistant director on UK independent features including Funny Cow, Cordelia and Rose, will be the series producer. “When we made the Boiling Point feature film, there were so many ideas left on the whiteboard that it always felt like a possibility we would come back to this world,” added Cummings. Inspired by Barantini’s own experiences working in restaurants, the Boiling Point film premiered at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in August 2021.

Lotfy Nathan, Haider Rashid films in 2022 Red Sea Souk project market

Projects from US filmmaker Lotfy Nathan and Italian-Iraqi director Haider Rashid are among the 23 titles selected for the project market of the Red Sea Souk, the industry platform of the Red Sea International Film Festival. Two of the Red Sea Lodge projects will receive production prizes of $100,000 each. Harka – then under the name Contra – took the top post-production award at last year’s inaugural Red Sea Souk project market. There are 10 feature debuts across the Red Sea Souk selection, which aims to discover and connect Arab and African filmmakers to the international film community. ‘You Hurt My Feelings’: Sundance Review

She’s also close to her interior designer sister Sarah (Michaela Watkins) and Sarah’s actor husband Mark (Arian Moayed). Despite their general air of amiability, every character is facing the potential for some low-level failure - Don keeps muddling his clients’ backstories. Sarah’s also facing woes over finding the perfect light fitting, while work trouble beckons for Mark. The potential fallout gives Holofcener’s drama some thrust, although there’s never a sense that anyone’s relationship is seriously under strain. You Hurt My Feelings has an almost constant supply of quotable zingers like this, which lend energy to every scene.

UK-Ireland box office preview: ‘Black Adam’ goes up against ‘The Banshees Of Inisherin’

Warner Bros’ Black Adam is this weekend’s widest UK-Ireland release, playing at 664 sites. It took £13.5m in its opening weekend. DC League Of Super-pets also took the top spot on its release in August, taking £2.6m in its opening weekend. The second widest release this weekend is Disney’s The Banshees Of Inisherin, opening at 550 sites. The Toronto premiere is directed by Michael Grandage, stars Harry Styles and Emma Corrin, and is a 1950s-set forbidden love story.
