A commentary by a Victoria resident who has been working in the community and watching councils for more than 40 years. On the one hand, seven of eight councillors are elected for the first time; on the other hand, a vote on a complicated and controversial plan for the whole city, the missing middle initiative, awaits. Citizens, now much more knowledgeable about missing middle, want a hearing directly with the new council before a vote. The councillors are banned from discussing missing middle with the people until the vote; the city clerk stated years ago that this rule is to make sure they all have the same knowledge. The second set of flaws has an illustration first appearing in the city’s fall 2021 Connect newsletter, sent out with bills.

Important piece of wreck believed to contain millions in gold now in B.C. museum

He was headed from Victoria to San Francisco to buy another sawmill that he planned to establish in Squamish. maritime history is now front and centre with the news last month that the wreck of the Pacific had been found and that it likely contains millions of dollars worth of gold from the Cassiar Gold Rush. The company is having built in Mexico a 75-by-30 metre structure that will be placed around the wreck as a base for the salvage effort. At the time of the sinking, there was an estimated 4,000 ounces of gold on board, now worth about $10 million, most likely in the form of assayed gold bullion. The ship was reported to be carrying at least one iron and wooden locked box owned by Wells Fargo Bank that contained gold.

Jack Knox: The Cordova Bay Blitzkrieg, or Battle of the Drainboard

On Nov. 16, 1942, a Mrs. A. Bramwell was doing the dishes when a bomb plowed through her roof and into her drainboard. The lack of bloodshed is probably why the Cordova Bay Blitzkrieg remains one of the lesser-known campaigns of the war. It happened when five unarmed practice bombs somehow escaped a twin-engine Hampden bomber on a training flight from the Patricia Bay Airport. One of the five plunged into the Haliburton Road house of James Muldoon, who lived half a kilometre east of what is now the Pat Bay Highway. The Cordova Bay Blitzkrieg wasn’t the only friendly-fire episode in our past.

CF Montreal hires Hernán Losada as new head coach, acquires defender Herrera

MONTREAL — CF Montreal has made major steps in restocking after a turbulent off-season. News of Losada's hiring came shortly after Montreal completed a deal with Real Salt Lake to acquire defender Aaron Herrera. Nancy was a finalist for MLS coach of the year after leading Montreal to a franchise-best 20-9-5 record. Salt Lake may also retain a percentage of a future transfer fee for Herrera, should his fee meet a certain threshold. Herrera, 25, played in 27 games with Salt Lake last season, including 25 as a starter, collecting three assists in 2,267 minutes played.

Charla Huber: Day-school survivor hopes sharing story of abuse helps others

Sampson attended the Tsartlip Indian Day School as a child until the end of Grade 6. During her formative years in the day school, she endured significant physical, sexual and emotional abuse. Indian day schools were similar to residential schools except that children could go home in the evenings. Her goal is to encourage other day-school survivors to come forward and join the Indian Day School Class Action Settlement. I had to look away because their faces looked so embarrassed.”I have met many people who have suffered sexual abuse.

PFC in need of goals aplenty in second leg of CPL playoff semifinal in Ottawa

The Tridents trailed the two-legged CONCACAF League Round of 16 set against CS Herediano 1-0 this summer following a late goal at Starlight Stadium. PFC won the second game 1-0 in San Jose before going down on penalty kicks. He said you can’t get both goals at once but just getting the first would unlock the game in many ways. The other CPL semifinal series, between third-seed Cavalry FC of Calgary and second-seed Forge FC of Hamilton, is tied 1-1 on aggregate with the second game today at Tim Hortons Field in the Steel City. The semifinal winners advance to meet in the single-game CPL final for the North Star Shield next weekend at the home of the highest-remaining seed.

Staying the course: John Schneider signs three-year deal as Toronto Blue Jays manager

Schneider and Atkins, the Blue Jays general manager, said that after Toronto was eliminated from the post-season their daily conversations stopped being about winning now and instead focused on the team's long-term plans. He led the Blue Jays to a 46-28 record and the post-season, but Toronto was swept in the three-game wild-card series by the Seattle Mariners. Atkins said that removing Schneider's interim tag was a completely different circumstance than hiring Montoyo, when the Blue Jays interviewed several different candidates. The Blue Jays finished the season second in the American League East standings and first in the wild-card race with a 92-70 record. A 42-year-old native of Princeton, N.J., Schneider was drafted by the Blue Jays in 2002 as a catcher and played six minor-league seasons before transitioning to coach.
