Closure of Naxxar care home raises concerns on resurfacing of Covid-19

Semira Abbas ShalanThe closure of the Simblija private home for the elderly in Naxxar has raised fresh concerns over the resurfacing of Covid-19. On Tuesday, the 153-bed care home told families that it will be closing its doors to visitors for seven days, as it had detected several cases of Covid-19 among the residents. Last week, Health Minister Chris Fearne said that while Covid-19 is still among us, the numbers are under control. Travellers arriving from China now need to produce a negative Covid-19 rapid antigen test to be allowed into Malta. The notice follows a meeting of European Union experts which “strongly encouraged” EU countries to demand Covid-19 tests from passengers coming from China.

Ukraine attacks Russia's hold on southern city of Kherson

Associated PressThe U.S. and its Western allies on Thursday dismissed Russia’s claims that banned biological weapons activities are taking place in Ukraine with American support, calling the allegation disinformation and fabrications. Russia’s U.N. ambassador said Moscow will pursue a U.N. investigation of its allegations that both countries are violating the convention prohibiting the use of biological weapons. The dispute came in the third U.N. Security Council meeting on Ukraine-related issues that Russia has called since Tuesday. He said Russia will move ahead on the resolution calling for a Security Council investigation. He said a second meeting of council experts is the next step, “and then we will be deciding when we’ll put it to the Security Council.”

Díaz nets 2 as Milan beat Berlusconi-owned Monza 4-1

Divock Origi scored his first goal for Milan and substitute Rafael Leão sealed the game after Filippo Ranocchia had pulled one back for Monza. The only negative note for Milan was the sight of Díaz limping off early in the second half clutching his left thigh. Milan moved level with Serie A leader Napoli ahead of the southern club’s match against Roma on Sunday. Berlusconi bought Monza in 2018 and installed Galliani as CEO — reuniting the duo that found success at Milan until Berlusconi sold the Rossoneri in 2017.

COP signatory parties have agreed to continue to work on sustainable agriculture by recognising the importance of using sustainable soil and management practices (e.g. crop rotation), sustainable production, and designing sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural systems to safeguard food security. These could include investing in precision agriculture practices, digital-enabled products, biotechnology, fleet management and digital sensors, amongst others. To this end, COP27 will further feature the prioritisation of sustainable agriculture practices that ultimately ensure resilience of the sector and food security.

Ronaldo scores on return, Man United beat Sheriff 3-0 in EL

Associated PressCristiano Ronaldo scored on his return to the Manchester United lineup to seal a 3-0 victory over Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League on Thursday that secured a spot in the knockout round. The Portugal star started against Sheriff and netted the last goal nine minutes from time on a rebound after Sheriff goalkeeper Maxym Koval saved his initial header. Substitute forward Marcus Rashford headed home the second in the second half following a cross from another substitute, Luke Shaw. Arsenal still leads Group A with 12 points, with Eindhoven second on 10 with one round remaining. But the Spanish club was already assured of qualifying in first place from Group C and avoiding the extra playoff round.

Labour’s half-baked abortion proposal

It is about time that we recognise that the country’s abortion legislation is not fit for purpose. After being ignored for 160 years Maltese abortion legislation requires to be brought in line with medical and scientific progress over the years. We do not require a half-baked reactive proposal but rather a proposal which addresses twenty-first century reality. During this week a group of local academics and some hangers-on have published a discussion paper which discusses government’s abortion proposal. The discussion paper is a negation of this journey and an attempt to change course, which attempt should be resisted.
