WASHINGTON, D.C.: The Chinese balloon shot down off the coast of South Carolina was part of a large surveillance program that Beijing has been conducting for "several years," the Pentagon said on Wednesday, an allegation that China has denounced as "information warfare." Pacific Air Forces, the Air Force command in the Indo-Pacific, said that the balloon was not shot down. The recent balloon was shot down by a US military fighter jet on Saturday. According to Ryder, North American Aerospace Defense Command began tracking the balloon as it approached US airspace. Meanwhile, China's Defense Ministry confirmed that it had refused Austin's call over Washington's "irresponsible" decision to shoot the balloon down.
