Gas crisis blamed for high price of sugar

Refiners said imports of sugar continue to be normal but reduced gas supply affected the refining as the process requires steaming. Taslim Shahriar, senior assistant general manager of Meghna Group of Industries, said the commodity importer and processor was supplying 1,800 tonnes daily. Businesspeople said the daily supply of sugar by private mills stands ataround 4,000 tonnes, which is half of the total production capacity. The DNCRP spoke to top officials of the gas distribution companies and Petrobangla about ensuring adequate gas supply to the refineries, he added. "The officials assured me that they would ensure gas supply in the zones where sugar refineries are located," said Shafiquzzaman.

House of the Dragon revives Game of Thrones franchise with a standout first season

Leading up to the premiere of House of the Dragon, the pressure on the showrunners was palpable. Coming off the back of a disastrous end to Game of Thrones, the onus was on the prequel to salvage the pride of a once revered fantasy-fiction universe. A lot of things stood out over the course of this season, especially the performances of the actors. In terms of filling the plot gaps in Fire and Blood, the book HoTD is based on, the screenwriters certainly delivered. With a wonderful pace-setter in place, season two of House of the Dragon promises to be exciting.

Lead poisoning: The next big threat for Bangladesh

In Bangladesh alone, it is documented that more than 35 million children have blood lead levels that are quite a bit above the safe range. Globally, one in three children – more than 800 million children in total – has elevated blood lead levels (BLL). At the industrial level, used lead acid battery (ULAB) recycling is a common source of hazardous emissions in semi-urban and rural Bangladesh. Turmeric adulteration and high blood lead levels have already been documented. Adding blood lead levels in national surveillance would help monitoring, evaluation and research to inform policy and its implementation.

FSIBL to bring cutting-edge tech for customers

In 2022, FSIBL introduced some mentionable deposit and investment products for its customers across the country. First Security Islami Bank started its journey on October 25 in 1999 under the name of 'First Security Bank Ltd', which was later transformed into a full-fledged Islamic bank on January 1 in 2009. First Security Islami Bank started its agent banking activities on May 29 in 2016, Ali said. At present, FSIBL has 84 agent banking outlets which are fully operational across the country. As per Bangladesh Bank data, the gross non-performing loan (NPL) of scheduled commercial banks rose by Tk 26,063 crore in a year to June 2022.

Jet fuel now costlier than ever

Padma Oil Company Limited, a subsidiary of Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) increased the price of jet fuel by Tk 5 per litre. So, a litre of jet fuel now costs Tk 130. BPC, however, slightly decreased jet fuel price for international routes. They said it is illogical, as jet fuel price has remained static in the international market. Lutfor Rahman, chief executive officer of US-Bangla Airlines, said, "BPC is hiking the jet fuel price almost every month.
