Rory Bremner pays tribute to John Bird as ‘one of the greatest satirists’

Comedian Rory Bremner has paid tribute to “one of the greatest satirists”, John Bird, who has died at the age of 86. Bird became known for sketches performed alongside John Fortune and Bremner in Channel 4’s satirical show Bremner, Bird And Fortune. Bird, Bremner and Fortune also collaborated in BBC shows Now Something Else and The Rory Bremner Show and Channel 4 series Rory Bremner, Who Else? Bremner added that seeing Bird and Fortune work was the “highlight” of his life and he would “marvel at the genius of it all”. Bird, born in Nottingham, went to a grammar school before going to Cambridge and meeting his comedy partner Fortune.

Ofgem lowers energy price cap but bills still expected to rise for households

The regulator said the reduction of almost £1,000 reflects recent falls in wholesale energy prices. However, domestic energy bills are still set to rise by an average of £500 a year despite the reduction as the Government’s support for households becomes more limited. The £3,280 figure indicates how much consumers on their energy suppliers’ basic tariff would pay if the Government’s Energy Price Guarantee (EPG) was not in place. Ofgem chief executive Jonathan Brearley said: “Although wholesale prices have fallen, the price cap has not yet fallen below the planned level of the Energy Price Guarantee. “If the reduction in wholesale prices we’re currently seeing continues, the signs are positive that the price cap will fall again in the summer, potentially bringing bills significantly lower.

Sir Trevor McDonald among stars to host Countdown for show’s 40th anniversary

Sir Trevor McDonald and Baroness Floella Benjamin are among the famous faces who will guest host Countdown next month as the show marks its 40th anniversary. The quiz show was the first programme aired on Channel 4 when the broadcaster launched in November 1982 and remains the channel’s longest-running instalment. Meanwhile, Channel 5 news presenter and former BBC Breakfast host Dan Walker will take over from Rinder in dictionary corner. To mark the anniversary, the broadcaster will also air a roster of programmes as part of their Truth and Dare season. Alongside its Truth and Dare Season, Channel 4 is marking 40 years of broadcasting with a special month-long run of its longest running show, Countdown.
