Bacharach won three Oscars, two Golden Globes, six competitive Grammy Awards and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement honour in 2008. Bacharach described his compositional technique as “horizontal”, one in which melody was allowed to stretch naturally across chord structures and rhythms. In the liner notes of his 1997 album Great Jewish Music: Burt Bacharach, composer John Zorn wrote: “Bacharach’s songs explode the expectations of what a popular song is supposed to be”.

Brett Dean wins an Ivor Novello Award

Australian Brett Dean has received an award for his song cycle Madame ma bonne soeur, with Thomas Adès, Judith Weir and Rebecca Saunders also among the winners. The 2022 Ivors Composer Awards winners have been announced, with Australian composer Brett Dean taking home the Chamber Ensemble Award, his first Ivor Novello Award from The Ivors Academy. Previously known as the British Composer Awards, this year’s ceremony marks its 20th edition and will be broadcast by BBC Radio 3. This is Dean’s first Ivors Composer Award win. Sound Fields with Felicity Wilcox and Rubiks Collective

On 26 October, contemporary art music ensemble Rubiks Collective will present They Swim Through Air at Melbourne Recital Centre. “It’s a program of unique sound creators dear to our creative hearts,” Rubiks Collective co-founder and flautist Tamara Kohler tells Limelight. Sound Fields is a 15-minute suite of twelve miniatures that each engage an individual painting by the artist Helen Frankenthaler. Sound Fields is an evocative, ekphrastic celebration of Frankenthaler as a resolute trailblazer in her own right. Rubiks Collective present They Swim Through Air featuring Felicity Wilcox’s Sound Fields on October 26 at the Melbourne Recital Centre.
