The crowd at Highmark Stadium erupted when an image of the recovering Hamlin filled the massive screens at the end zones near the end of the first half. Hamlin was not seen before the game got underway in snowy conditions. The Bills made no announcement about his whereabouts, but word of his attendance had spread by the time he appeared on the screens. A family spokesman for Hamlin said this week that he still faces a lengthy rehabilitation. Last weekend, he live-tweeted from home while watching the Bills’ 34-31 win over Miami in a wild-card playoff.

Coach Frank Reich announced Monday that second-year quarterback Sam Ehlinger will make his starting debut Sunday against the Washington Commanders. “Right now, the move is for Sam to be the starter the rest of the season,” Reich said. “We’ve always thought Sam had some special sauce. Ehlinger thought the move was made primarily for using him for a few plays.

Italy’s Meloni easily wins confidence vote in parliament

On Wednesday, the new government will face a vote in the upper chamber, the Senate, where it also holds a solid majority. Such attitudes are tantamount to “a lack of respect for the Italian people, who don’t need lessons,” Meloni said. With the confidence votes out of the way, Meloni will be able to get down to the business of governing. “I have never felt sympathy or closeness for any non-democratic regime, including fascism,” Meloni told lawmakers in the Chamber of Deputies.

Top physical form helped soccer player in Italy knife attack

MILAN (AP) — Being in top physical form helped Spanish soccer player Pablo Marí avoid life-threatening injuries in a knife attack at an Italian shopping center, the surgeon who operated on his wounded back said Friday. Five people were stabbed Thursday and one was killed after a man grabbed a knife from a supermarket shelf, authorities said. Police arrested a 46-year-old Italian man suspected in the attack at a shopping center in Assago, a suburb of Milan, carabinieri said. I’m not a hero.”Galliani said Marí also had injuries to his mouth, possibly from gritting his teeth during the attack. Monza coach Raffaele Palladino also visited with Marí, and Monza issued a statement on Twitter on Friday mourning the victim in the attack.

Wall Street rallies for best week since June on rate hopes

By STAN CHOEAP Business WriterNEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street piled more gains Friday onto its mammoth rally from a day earlier to close out its best week since the summer. The S&P 500 rose 0.9% a day after soaring 5.5% for its best day in more than two years. Inflation expectations are currently high relative to history, but a preliminary report on Friday suggested they’re not moving very much. High inflation helped knock down the survey’s reading for overall consumer sentiment by more than economists expected. A week ago, they saw a higher ultimate rate as more likely, with a sizable chunk expecting something like 5.25% to 5.50%.

NFL playoffs: Seahawks are in field after Lions stun Packers

The Lions’ upset win capped a weekend that saw the Dolphins make it back to the playoffs for the first time since 2016. Seven of the 14 teams that qualified for the playoffs didn’t make the field last season, including the Seahawks, Ravens, Jaguars, Chargers, Dolphins, Vikings and Giants. The Lions didn’t have much to play for against the Packers other than pride, but that was enough. The Bengals avoided a coin flip for home field after beating the Ravens 27-16, but there still could be a neutral field AFC championship game if the Bills line up against the Chiefs. Miami then had to wait a few minutes for Buffalo to finish off New England to make the Dolphins’ playoff appearance official.

Rodgers, Packers lose 20-16 to Lions, miss playoffs

The four-time MVP and the Green Bay Packers won’t be participating in the playoffs. Although he is under contract for next season, the 39-year-old Rodgers has said he doesn’t know whether he will continue playing. Rodgers connected with Christian Watson for a 45-yard completion that set up his 13-yard touchdown pass to Allen Lazard. On the Packers’ final possession, Rodgers threw two incompletions before Joseph intercepted him for the third time this season. This marks the third straight season the Packers have ended their season by losing at Lambeau Field.

Stocks end up mixed on Wall Street after early gains fade

The S&P 500 dipped 0.1% after surrendering an early gain of 1.4% in its first trading after closing out its first winning week in the last five. The yield on the 10-year Treasury, which helps set rates for mortgages and other important loans, fell to 3.52% from 3.57% late Friday. Tesla added 5.9%, Nvidia rose 5.2% and Advanced Micro Device climbed 5.1% for some of the biggest gains in the S&P 500. Altogether, the S&P 500 slipped 2.99 points to 3,982.09. For the full year of 2023, they see zero growth for S&P 500 earnings per share.
