The Bengals entered the game already feeling disrespected when the NFL began selling tickets for a would-be game at Atlanta, that was dependent on the Bills and Chiefs winning this weekend. Hamlin’s inspirational presence while watching the game from an end-zone suite was not enough to spark the Bills. Joe Mixon scored on a 1-yard run, and Evan McPherson made field goals from 20 and 28 yards in a game the Bengals never trailed. The Chiefs are making their fifth straight appearance in the AFC Championship Game following a 27-20 win Saturday against Jacksonville. … The Bills dropped to 13-2 when hosting an NFL playoff game.

Phillies hit four homers, rally past Padres to lead NLCS 3-1

NEW YORK — Cristian Javier and Houston’s bullpen combined on a three-hitter, Chas McCormick followed a dropped flyball with an early two-run homer and the Astros beat Gerrit Cole and the New York Yankees 5-0 Saturday night to take a 3-0 A.L. Only one of 39 teams has recovered from a 3-0 postseason series deficit to win, Boston against the Yankees in the 2004 ALCS. Christian Vázquez added a two-run single and Trey Mancini a sacrifice fly after the Astros chased Cole in the sixth inning and opened a five-run lead. Javier pitched seven innings during the Astros’ combined no-hitter at Yankee Stadium on June 25 and was nearly as sharp this time. Cole, baseball’s highest paid pitcher with a nine-year, $324 million deal, allowed a home run for the 11th consecutive start.

Helias capitalizes on its chances in softball semifinal win against Washington

SPRINGFIELD — There were plenty of scoring opportunities in Thursday afternoon’s Class 4 state softball semifinal game between the Helias Lady Crusaders and the Washington Blue Jays. Despite having just three hits, the Lady Crusaders worked their magic on the basepaths. The Lady Crusaders will face eighth-ranked Kearney (25-8) for the title at 10 a.m. today. With hits few and far between, the Lady Crusaders showed off their baserunning skills. While Thursday’s game felt like a title game, it’ll be less than a 24-hour turnaround before the Lady Crusaders take on the Lady Bulldogs.

Jefferson City girls roll past Sedalia Smith-Cotton

The Jefferson City Lady Jays scored the first 16 points Tuesday night against the Sedalia Smith-Cotton Lady Tigers and never looked back, picking up a 69-29 Central Missouri Activities Conference victory at Fleming Fieldhouse. “Anytime you can get a win in conference play is awesome,” Jefferson City coach Kay Foster said. After coming off a loss in the championship of the Jefferson Bank Holiday Hoops Classic last Friday, starting fast was big for the Lady Jays. Jefferson City rode the fast start and led 22-1 after the first quarter. Jefferson City also won the JV game Tuesday night, beating the Lady Tigers 44-6.
