German war film All Quiet on the Western Front has won seven awards at this year’s BAFTAs, including best film, best director for Edward Berger, best adapted screenplay and best film not in the English language. It was also a good night for The Banshees of Inisherin, which won four awards, including outstanding British film, best original screenplay for Martin McDonagh, and both Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan in the supporting acting categories. Charlotte Wells’ Aftersun, which was backed by the BFI Film Fund using National Lottery money, triumphed in the outstanding British debut category. Cate Blanchett wins best actress for her turn as the imposing classical music conductor of Tár, while best actor was a win for rock’n’roll, with Austin Butler recognised for the title role in Elvis. Winning films that first screened to UK audiences ahead of awards season at the BFI London Film Festival include Aftersun, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (best animated film) and The Banshees of Inisherin.
