ARGOS is to close its entire operation in the Republic of Ireland with the loss of around 580 jobs. In a statement, Argos said the decision followed a lengthy review of its entire business and operations in the Republic. The retail group confirmed it has started consulting its 580 staff in the Republic about the closures. Commenting on Thursday’s announcement, Andy McClelland, Argos Ireland operations manager, said: “We understand this is difficult news for our customers and colleagues. “On behalf of everyone at Argos I would like to thank our colleagues, customers, suppliers and partners for their support to our business.”

Russian court hears appeal by US basketball player over nine-year sentence

A Russian court has begun hearing American basketball star Brittney Griner’s appeal against her nine-year prison sentence for drug possession. Griner’s February arrest came at a time of heightened tensions between Moscow and Washington, just days before Russia sent troops into Ukraine. The nine-year sentence was close to the maximum of 10 years, and Griner’s lawyers argued after the conviction that the punishment was excessive. In September, US President Joe Biden met with Cherelle Griner, the wife of Brittney Griner, as well as the player’s agent, Lindsay Colas. Mr Biden also sat down separately with Elizabeth Whelan, Paul Whelan’s sister.

Propitious time for Irish unity

There has never been a more propitious time to progress Irish unity. Politically Brexit has resulted in major damage to the unity of the UK. The alienation of even moderate nationalists has rendered it a ‘catalyst’ for Irish unification. Democratic trends – namely a Catholic majority within NI – make unity much more probable. However, there are a number of caveats that should also be taken into consideration that could derail the path to unity.

Sinn Féin reiterates calls for joint authority if Stormont assembly not restored

Mary Lou McDonald has said that joint authority between Dublin and London should be “plan B” if an Executive at Stormont is not restored. The Sinn Féin leader said that if the DUP continues to boycott the assembly, then the British and Dublin governments should form a partnership. Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney said during a recent visit to Belfast that joint authority was not the “focus” of the Dublin government. He made the comments as he sought to address recent loyalist anger about the prospect of UK/Irish joint authority if devolution was not restored in Belfast. Meanwhile, Sinn Féin Stormont leader Michelle O’Neill said the UK Government needs to “step up to the plate” and find a way to make the Northern Ireland Protocol work.

Eating Out: The Orangery, Drenagh House Estate, Limavady

So I may or may not be right (put your mortgage on the latter) in saying that The Orangery is a new café. I'd add that I'd be really disappointed if it has been around for a while, because I'd have missed out. It is, quite simply, a really lovely place. My brother's chicken and ham quiche was very well-filled, with a lovely, light, crispy base. The scone, while low on apple, was light and lovely, soft on the inside with a nice outer crust.

THE vacuum caused by the absence of a Stormont Executive has nudged discussion of joint authority to the fore, causing jitters among unionists. The Northern Ireland Office also said joint authority was not being considered, with the consent principle governing the constitutional position of the region. The notion of joint authority has been dismissed by British prime ministers in the past. Britain has previously put joint authority on the table for another contested region. "Practicalities would mean that ‘true’ joint authority in the sovereign sense would likely not be manageable in a constitutionally contested society such as ours."
