Russian missiles cross border into Poland, killing two

Two people were killed after stray Russian missiles inadvertently hit a small Polish village near the border with Ukraine. A senior US intelligence official confirmed Russian missiles had crossed into Nato member Poland, killing two people. Ukrainian State Emergency Service firefighters work to extinguish a fire at the scene of a Russian shelling in Kyiv. But large parts of eastern and southern Ukraine remain under Russian control and fighting continues. Residents receive food donations in Novokyivka, southern Ukraine.

The Kiwi secured his fourth win of the season on the Champions Tour yesterday but then dropped the glass trophy - which thankfully didn’t break while leaving a decent mark on the 18th green. Sunak makes Parliament debut as PM, axes more Truss policies

LONDON (AP) — Rishi Sunak faced the opposition in Parliament for the first time as Britain's prime minister Wednesday, promising to restore economic stability after his predecessor's tax plans triggered market tumult. Sunak ripped up more of predecessor Liz Truss' flagship policies, reinstating a moratorium on fracking for shale gas that Truss had lifted. Plans for large-scale deregulation of the economy, part of Truss' vision to unleash economic growth, are also under review, Sunak's spokeswoman said. "We will have to take difficult decisions to restore economic stability and confidence," Sunak told the House of Commons. Sunak also kept in place Treasury chief Jeremy Hunt, whom Truss appointed two weeks ago to steady the markets.

If Football Ferns’ coach Jitka Klimkova had a Christmas wish, it has already been granted. The Ferns will have the best possible build up for the 2023 Fifa Women’s World Cup, with two blockbuster home matches against the United States early next year. The fixtures – in Wellington on January 18 and Auckland three days later – will be historic, as the four time world champions have never played on New Zealand soil. The team finished on the podium in every Olympics and World Cup event between 1991 and 2015. The Stars and Stripes will represent a massive challenge, but one that is needed for the Ferns, six months out from the World Cup.

Formal consultations began on Thursday aimed at giving Italy a new government within days, but feuding between right-wing campaign allies over Russia and Ukraine risks undermining the prospective governing coalition's pro-NATO, pro-Europe pledges. President Sergio Mattarella invited party leaders for talks at the Quirinal Palace before he gives a formal mandate to a premier-designate following the country's Sept. 25 election. Mattarella has also insisted that Italy must stand united with European Union partners in the West's stance against Russia in its war against Ukraine. On the eve of the Quirinal consultations, Meloni dealt Berlusconi an ultimatum over foreign policy in the government she intends to lead.
