All Quiet on the Western Front’s seven wins including Best Film was history-making stuff: Edward Berger’s German-language adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s 1922 anti-war novel is now the most successful film made in a language other than English in the ceremony’s 76-year history. (Last month, having been shortlisted in 14 categories, the Netflix release also became the joint most-nominated alongside Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.) Early on, McDonagh’s film took both of the supporting acting prizes, while Berger’s nabbed Best Film Not in the English Language (and Best Adapted Screenplay. Then Best Score and Best Sound went to All Quiet, and Outstanding British Film to Banshees (yes, it’s Irish, but a Film4 production, so it qualifies). While the two bodies’ memberships do overlap somewhat, their recent tastes haven’t often aligned – their respective Best Film awards have only gone to the same recipient once (Nomadland, in 2021) in the last eight years.
