'A floating feather': China's latest airport design unveiled

Sign up hereOne of China's best-known architects, Ma Yansong, has unveiled his firm's vision for a serene new airport terminal in the northeastern city of Changchun, Jilin province. Intended to resemble a "floating feather" when viewed from above, the design was revealed Tuesday after Ma's Beijing-based MAD Architects won an international competition to mastermind the expansion of Changchun's Longjia International Airport. MAD Architects says the feather inspiration is a nod to the airplanes that will ascend and descend from the airport each day. Credit: MAD ArchitectsCreated in collaboration with China Airport Planning & Design Institute and the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design, the proposal is among a slew of eye-catching new — or expanded — airports opening across China. Overseen by both international and domestic architects, recently completed projects include Beijing's starfish-esque Daxing International Airport , which was led by the renowned Zaha Hadid Architects, and Chengdu New Tianfu International Airport , whose shape nods to a mythical sunbird.

An early rise in respiratory viruses in children is overwhelming some hospitals

CNN —A surge in respiratory illnesses among children is beginning to put a strain on hospitals. In particular, hospitals are seeing a rise in cases of respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, a common cold virus that can be associated with severe disease in young children and older adults. Surveillance data collected by the CDC clearly shows a rise in RSV cases nationwide in recent weeks, with cases detected by PCR tests more than tripling over the past two months and nearing last year’s peaks. October has been like never before for this virus,” Monica M. Buchanan, senior director of strategic and enterprise communications for Connecticut Children’s Hospital, told CNN. This shift comes as other respiratory viruses – the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, rhinoviruses, enteroviruses and flu – drive more concern, too.

Kachin, Myanmar: Dozens killed by military airstrikes during celebration event

CNN —Dozens of people have been killed in military airstrikes that hit a celebratory event in Myanmar’s mountainous Kachin state on Sunday, according to local news outlets and international organizations. Victims had been attending an event, including a concert, held by the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) to mark the 62nd anniversary of the group’s political wing, the Kachin Independence Organization, according to Reuters, citing KIA spokesperson Naw Bu. Reuters and local news outlet The Irrawaddy reported at least 50 people were killed. Kachin Alliance, a Kachin community organization based in Washington, DC, said Kachin artists, local elders, and KIO leaders were among those killed. The attack on Sunday drew international condemnation, with the United Nations saying it was concerned over reports of more than 100 civilians impacted.
