Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Lt-Gen Lucky Irabor, assured voters that the military will take control and ensure peace for the conduct of the elections. Many Nigerians wonder how the election would fare in a cashless Nigeria for the first time in the country’s checkered history. And most importantly, it should truly reflect the wishes of the majority of Nigerians.

Relatedly, Nigeria is in a period of transition, and as many have submitted, the 2023 elections, especially the presidential, will be definitive in many ways, considering the high stakes involved, as well as mounting expectations occasioned – in some instances – by somewhat unfulfilled agitations. Unlike in 2019, where there were two major political parties – the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) – the 2023 elections will witness the entry of additional players, who are formidable, in their own rights. It also prevents and protects the State against national security threats. Having noted that, Nigerians are called upon to, as a matter of civic duty and obligation, give absolute support to law enforcement agencies, as they work round-the-clock to provide security for the citizenry. Thankfully, patriotic groups like the Celebrities United for Peace (CUP) have taken up the gauntlet; to mobilise citizens’ support for security agencies towards a hitch-free elections, and peaceful coexistence.

President Buhari does not mean well for Nigerians

By Pastor Peters OmoragbonPresident Buhari has just announced the extension of the usage of the 200 Naira notes alongside the new notes for another 60 days from February 10th. This means that the 500 and 1000 old notes remain illegal tender according to and in support of the CBN directive. Yesterday, the Apex court extended its injunction that all the old Naira notes remain legal tender until the case before it is disposed of. President Buhari has further added not only to the confusion in the society by this parallel directive to that of the Supreme Court but also to the sufferings of the people. Even with the reintroduction of the 200 Naira notes, it still does not solve the problem of the limit and rationing of the amount anyone can take from the bank.

Verstappen wins USGP, Red Bull takes 2022 F1 teams' title

Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen managed to hold off Mercedes-Benz AMG's Lewis Hamilton to secure victory on Sunday at the 2022 Formula 1 United States Grand Prix. Verstappen was already crowned the 2022 world champion at the previous round in Japan, but his victory at the U.S. Grand Prix, held in Austin, Texas, helped secure Red Bull the 2022 Constructors' title. Verstappen and his team dedicated the victory to Dietrich Mateschitz, Red Bull's co-founder and owner of the Red Bull F1 team, who passed away on Oct. 22 following a drawn-out battle with cancer. The race resumed on lap 26, with Verstappen leading, followed closely by Hamilton and then Red Bull's Sergio Perez and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. In the Constructors' Championship, Red Bull sits on an unbeatable 656 points, versus the 469 of Ferrari and 416 of Mercedes.
